Voter Education Project Inc. Press Conference

Why: To Promote Voter Registration and Town Hall Educational Meetings

The Voter Education Project, Inc., in collaboration with the El Paso County Voter Consortium will hold a press conference to discuss the continuation of its voter registration, education, and mobilization drive that has now been recognized by the Southwest Voter Registration and Education Project and the Willie C. Velasquez organizations, joining their national initiative to motivate the Latino population in El Paso County.

This effort is now a part of a national movement to mobilize 125 counties to register, educate and mobilize voters for the 2008 Presidential election. The Consortium also includes the Ya Es Hora, Ve Y Vota program, which has been working for two years to include the immigrant population and new citizens in the United States. This community-based nonpartisan, nonprofit effort will now focus on 50 Town Hall Educational Meetings to help educate the 500,000 potential voters in El Paso County.

Beginning on September 15, the El Paso County Voter Consortium, with the help of the El Paso County Elections Department will host educational Town Hall Meetings. There will be hands-on demonstrations using touch-screen voting machines and information will be provided in English and Spanish to all voters on their rights as U.S. Citizens, with help numbers to call for additional assistance. Information will also be provided for individual voters with disabilities, early voting, mail-in ballots, and provisional ballots.

El Paso County Voter Consortium members include: Voter Education Project, Inc., El Paso Counts, YWCA, NAACP local chapter, UTEP SGA, Young People For (UTEP), EPCC SGA, EPCC Student Leadership, the GLBTQ Center of El Paso, La Fe, Border Network for Human Rights, NALEO, La Raza, Southwest Voter Registration and Education Project, Willie C. Velasquez Institute, City of El Paso, County of El Paso, GECU, El Paso Electric, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Printing by the Minute, Thomason Hospital, University of Texas Tech El Paso, Dona Lupe Restaurant, JB’s Café, LULAC District IV, El Paso Times, El Paso Media Group, El Diario, Entravision, Univision and Sunbowl Association.
