Santos Family Keeps Home, Thanks to FirstLight FCU Texas Credit Union League Honors FirstLight for Commitment to Community

Thursday, June 4, 2009 – (Dallas, TX) – Like millions of American families struggling to make their mortgage payment in this downturn economy, Jose Rafael Santos saw foreclosure on the horizon. Fortunately, his mortgage is with FirstLight Federal Credit Union (FCU), a not-for-profit financial cooperative that puts people over profit. According to Santos, credit union staff treated him like an individual, and not just as a faceless account. They worked with him to consolidate his debt, develop a payment plan to bring his mortgage up to date, and in the end, restored his faith in the financial system.

“I’m so grateful to the credit union,” notes Santos. “They have been such a big help to me and my family. They have helped keep me and my family in our home, and are also saving us $900 a month.”

On June 8, FirstLight FCU will be awarded the Juntos Avanzamos, or “Together We Advance,” designation from the Texas Credit Union League (TCUL) for its exceptional service to members like Santos. The goal of the Juntos Avanzamos program is to empower Texas credit unions to more effectively serve the needs of Hispanics of modest means, and provide families with an affordable alternative to expensive fringe financial service providers. TCUL will present FirstLight FCU with the Juntos Avanzamos flag on June 8 at its Northeast El Paso branch, representing the credit union’s participation in the TCUL initiative. And Santos will be there to celebrate his credit union’s achievement.
