US REGULATOR ACCUSES EL PASO ENERGY FIRM OF FRAUD

The US Securities and Exchange Commission said Friday it had charged Texas-based El Paso Corporation, a major energy firm, with fraud for improperly overstating its oil and gas reserves to investors.

WASHINGTON HOMICIDE SUSPECT ARRESTED AT EL PASO BORDER

A man accused of a fatal gang shooting seven years ago in Yakima has been arrested in El Paso, Texas, crossing the border from Mexico.
Customs and Border Protection says the 26-year-old man, Salvador Nava, presented his identification and declared his U.S. citizenship at 4 a.m. Sunday in a pedestrian inspection area. Officers discovered a murder warrant and booked him into the jail in El Paso for extradition to Yakima.
He's accused of firing the shots that killed Antone Masovero in May 2001 in a car in Yakima. Police say the shooting was gang-related.

EL PASOAN SETS AMERICAN RECORD IN 50-METER FREESTYLE

Dara Torres was back in the pool at the U.S. Olympic trials Saturday, easily advancing out of the 50-meter freestyle preliminaries but seeing Lara Jackson break her American record in the event.
Jackson, a 21-year-old from El Paso, Texas, surprised herself by going six-tenths below her previous best.

Across the street from Villa O, actor Brendan Fraser (The Mummy, Bedazzled, Gods and Monsters) turned up at the gourmet Mexican eatery Trece on Wednesday. Chef Reuben Peck personally prepared some of his specialties, such as lobster nachos, for the movie star and his friends.

THIRD INTOXICATED SOLIDER ACCUSED OF KILLING A CIVILIAN IN 6 MONTHS

This year, a New York Times examination of killings in this country by veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan found that drinking or drug use was frequently involved in the crimes. Last month, a soldier at Fort Bliss, outside El Paso, was charged with killing a woman in a drunken-driving accident — the third intoxicated soldier there accused of killing a civilian in six months, said the commander, Maj. UTEP BRINGS SOMOANS ONTO GRIDIRON

"There are at least six Samoans on the team, and one of them is from American Samoa," Misa-Amituanai said. "I felt real comfortable there on my recruiting trip. I didn't feel out of place."

In past years, El Paso, Texas, might have seemed like an odd destination for a Samoan from California. But that was before Mike Price arrived at UTEP four years ago.

Price had a long history of recruiting Samoans when he was at Washington State from 1989 to 2002, and he has brought that philosophy to the Miners.

CENTENARIAN HAS SEEN A LOT OF HISTORY

Teddy Roosevelt was president the year Lula Johnston was born in El Paso, Texas. Seventeen presidents and 100 years later, Ms. Johnston plans on casting a vote in November's election.

Ms. Johnston, who says she has voted in every presidential election since she became eligible to register, turned 100 years old on Sunday. Family and friends gathered the week before for an early birthday celebration. The party featured 100 pink roses and the release of 100 balloons.
