Severed head art represents Juarez violence

by Victoria Molinar and Cynthia Romero

Most people buy piñatas of a horse or the cartoon character Pikachu. Anyone interested in buying a piñata of a head dripping blood can find one at the Main Library in Downtown El Paso for $75.

The heads are part of the exhibit "Cd. Juarez es the # 1," which is also the name of a Juan Gabriel song. Artist Abel Saucedo explained that the heads, which went up July 1, represent the violence that is taking place in Juarez. More of his art can be found on his MySpace.

Saucedo has received mixed reactions on the head display, which will continue throughout July. We asked people at the library if they thought of the Juarez violence when they saw the heads and whether they found them offensive or not. Below are their opinions.
