New data reported by the Mexican media suggest that emigration to the United States rose sharply in 2007, the first full year of the administration of Mexican President Felipe Calderon. Based on United States Census Bureau numbers, Mexico’s National Population Council
(Conapo) estimated that 679,611 Mexicans made the move to El Norte last year. According to Conapo, the number of Mexican nationals relocating to the U.S. was up 5.9 percent from 2006. It was the highest jump in Mexican emigration registered since 2002. The total number of Mexican-born residents living in the U.S. now stands at 11,800,000 persons, or just over 10 percent of Mexico’s population, Conapo estimated.
In 2007 Mexicans confronted stagnating or declining wages, increased joblessness, steep price hikes for tortillas and other basic commodities, and rising public insecurity.
Conapo’s new data provides an important glimpse of contemporary Mexican immigrants in the US. While still a minority, women are fast catching up with men, and now account for 44 percent of all Mexican migrants in this country. Although Mexican immigrants are now found in the remotest stretches of the U.S., even in the frigid reaches of the North Pole, slightly more than 70 percent reside in four states that have long been immigration magnets -- California, Texas, Illinois and Arizona.
Re-confirming another trend, Conapo reported that only a tiny minority of Mexican immigrants, or four percent, work in agriculture. Fifty percent of employed migrants toil in the service sector and another forty percent work in manufacturing, according to Conapo. Overwhelmingly, the typical Mexican immigrant is of prime working age, with 68.6 percent ranging from 15 to 44 years of age. People aged 45 to 64, meanwhile, account for 20.8 percent of the migrant population. Fifty percent of Mexican migrants in the U.S. have less than a high school education, Conapo found, while only
5.9 percent have professional or post-graduate studies.
Poverty continues to pull down the fortunes of today’s migrants. Conapo calculated that employed Mexican migrants earn an average $24,270 per year, though more than a third, or 34.4 percent, make between $10,000-20,000 annually. An estimated 18.9 percent of Mexican-born men and 26.3 percent of Mexican-born women fall below the poverty threshold, according to the demographic research agency. Almost six out of 10 migrants lack health insurance.
Various media reports have suggested that fewer Mexicans are making the trek to the United States in 2008. A combination of economic downturn, stricter border controls and anti-immigrant hostility has been cited as the reason for the change. Until now, however, there is little evidence of a large-scale, voluntary return of Mexicans to their country of origin.
Indeed, the same trends that pushed people out in 2007 have deepened in 2008. In the northern state of Chihuahua, for instance, 26,000 people have lost their jobs in the export manufacturing sector hit by the economic crisis in the United States. At the same time, greater numbers of people are reportedly fleeing the country because of kidnappings and narco-linked murders which have left more than 1,000 dead in Chihuahua alone since the beginning of the year.

It really doesn't matter which President we have, when it comes to the illegal immigration issue. Both are looking for votes from the Hispanic groups, so they have compromised our sovereignty by trying to push through a path to citizenship for lawbreakers. Go here for unrevealed facts of corruption regarding a immigration vote.
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,428082,00.html
The worst of the two parties are the Democrat leadership however, with Pelosi leading the charge. Unknowingly behind closed doors they have gutted the border fence appropriations, so that their are wide open corridors were drugs, terrorist and millions of impoverished people can slip through. This is of course to slack the thirst of cheap labor for parasite employers.
Right now with our economy almost on the verge of collapse, the politicians have not revealed that to some extent illegal immigrants were allowed to get mortgages with just a IRS (TIN) number. This was a way to circumvent the fact, that they cannot be issued a legal citizen or resident Social Security number. Incorrigibles brokers fraudulently negotiated loans for homes with little or no cost in moving into a property. Today we have the largest bail out of giant mortgage firms, accelerated foreclosures as illegal alien families unable to pay the escalating mortgages walked away. By flooding the market with unqualified buyers, government bureaucracies have artificially stimulated housing demand, which caused home purchases to explode, leading to the unsustainable housing price bubble that has finally burst.
http://www.familysecuritymatters.org/publications/id.1258/pub_detail.asp Just about anyone can get a "stated income" loan provided one's FICO SCORE is high enough. By lowering the scale enough, Uncle Sam has indeed brought diversity to house ownership. However, at a terrible cost?

what is disgusting is that there are individuals who slither their way into good, progressive movements such as "saving the environment" in order to inject their agenda (since no one is listening to them any longer) such as what the racist, xenophobic types are now doing with the environmental movement.
i live in new york city (and los angeles before then) and no one here (or in los angeles) cares about immigration. although i should say, the immigration issue they do worry about is about the manner that immigrants are facing attacks that getting more and more violent.
instead of jokes like fox news references take a look at truths like these (just cut & paste):
http://www.splcenter.org/news/item.jsp?aid=334
take it from me, an el paso native, and one who is pretty familiar with racism towards hispanics, if over twelve million people who live in the "cultural centers" of the country, really don't care about immigration (eight million in n.y.c. and four million in l.a.), then i suggest those who think immigration is an issue should start worrying about the real problems, such as failing banks, our oil supply running out or our world succumbing to the effects of global warming...

By and large the ills that have beset the United States vis-a-vis Mexico have been engendered by Republicans who can't seem to get anything right . This is not to say that Democrats are off the hook. But Democrats are more willing to face the future and its realities than Republicans who are always facing the past with fictitious histories and cockamamy fables about the foundation of the country and how it's being overrun by hordes of Mexicans whose only aim is to subvert the American way of life. Immigrants are not the problem. It's those Republican crazies who put party and ideology before the country who are the prolem.

Ms. Juarez,
Take it from me ,a native El Pasoan and one who is familiar with rasism towards whites in El Paso ....that the hospitals and schools are filled with people from Mexico (and other Hispanic countires) that show interest only receiving the benefits of living in the States and not the duties that come with it.
My grandfather learned and spoke English , sold candy on the street corners and never , never asked the States to bend the rules or make his new life more like his old life because his skin was brown. His sons only spoke English, serve in the war efforts and my father became a doctor. In other words, my Grandfather became a full and proud American citizen and acted like it ,thus setting an example for his sons.
The other side of the family crossed a mighty ocean , a great wilderness and then dangerous desert to get here. They stop speaking German and set up a school using ENGLISH for thier children.
This the plight of all immigrants throughout the human experience ...the parents must pay dearly for their benefit of thier children.
Yet a majority from hispanic culture, (from my observation only here in El Paso) seems eager to take from but not give back and honor the American ways...I.E. LEARN AND SPEAK ENGILSH PLEASE!!!
Sign up for the task and greatness of embracing America and it's people for goodness sakes!!! (back ground music playing " God Bless America").....
We all have our stories of pearls and hardships, we are all God's children, we should always give more then we take, respect the hand that feeds us and honor our forefathers with English tongues and documents.
Grow up, get real, life is tough ,speak English.
Became Americans in your souls, like all the other good immigrants groups have.
Stop belly aching about the States if you're not willing to change yourself.
Stop trying to reform the States if your heart is really in Mexico.
Go back there if it is so f***ing great.
Common sense would dictate that one would use their mind, body and soul for the country that they love. Work on the problems there so people can live in peace, earn decent wages to feed their children , nurse their sick and tend to their elderly.
There's alot more work to do there!! Go there, use your talents there!!
Why aren't Mexicans using the same amount of passion and energy to reforming their country, on their time ,on thier peso... instead changing the States to better suit them?
Moreover.....
There is no logic in waving the Mexican flag durning immigration marches. They look like stupid clueless cows confused about their location.

dear rachel,
I am sorry that your "white privilege" has been taken by people whom you think are less than you, but just in case you didn't notice, El Paso, in the aspect of power structure, is still run by whites, or as we say in Texas, "Anglos", (think economics!)
I question your ability to critically examine what is in front of you, that is, the words on your computer screen. I never said that "Mexico is great" but if you insist on sterotyping me, then that's a different matter. For the record, I speak from the point of view of a native El Pasoan who has lived in the largest cities of this country, and also where Anglos are indeed the majority and where you find the true American culture being built. Funny thing though, a majority of Anglos do not think like you, (and actually it was an Anglo who mentioned you are being bitter about losing white privilege.)
I appreciate your honesty in how you view Mexicans, and I am honored that you referred to the people of my culture simply as "cows, " (thanks for keeping us mammals or where you also referring to the many Anglos that participated in these marches, such as the New York mayor, Michael Bloomberg?)
I do have two suggestions: maybe the state of Texas is no longer for you. Maybe you should make your way up north (or west to Los Angeles) , becuase New York City is welcoming to all, even the "bad immigrants", unfortunately though, you might want to leave some of your views behind becuase its those views (calling people cows, spewing verbage that demands English only, etc) that makes Texans like me look bad and labeled provincial.
Next time, you might want to use a little more "common sense" when responding since many people who read this, i.e., the "cows", might take you a little more seriously.

Ms. Juarez and anyone else to whom I have offended with my comments....
I AM TRULY VERY SORRY. Please forgive me.
You hear bitterness and I was expressing my frustration.
It deeply saddens me that English is not the langauge of choice here in El Paso. The irony of it all, is that I was complaining to you and yet your command of the English language is superior.
Again, please accept my apologies.
But you did not answer my question regarding the energy spent in trying to change the States for the immigrants, instead of the immigrants trying to change for the States.
Would a person go into their neighbor's house and insist that the furniture and pictures be move around to accommodate thier preferences?
It's about manners, good manners...like good guests and good immigrants.
I too have lived in other places. I have lived were the sun would only shine 13 days a year and no one person spoke more than 41 words of English. I never expected that my comfort level was to be shouldered by my new neighbors on the other side of the world.
I believe very strongly, without any doubt, that we are all God's children. No one group holds the the crown of glory. No group is monolithic either. We are all just trying to do the best we can with what we have been given. We as humans, are hardwired to move to higher ground, better places and all that good stuff.
I don't begrudge anyone for trying to enhance their lives and come to the States or anywhere else. I do however, think it is rude to impose your old life on your new neighbors.
The "'white privilege" that you refer to did exist...but not in my time and never for me. I hate snooty people.
And about the "cow" comment... they did look like stupid cows!
But that has nothing to do with being Mexican....I have seen alot of white stupid cows too!
In closing, remember that it's is not what they call you that is important, but it is what you answer to.
Respectfully, Rachel
kathy

My hat goes off to Rachel and her outspokenness of what is happening in El Paso. We have literally become Mexico. It is a travesity when an english speaking kid cannot get into Pre-k because they only speak English. Spanish speaking kids get first priority. They are even given grade cards in Spanish!! This is America and we speak Spanish-oh excuse me I mean English. English is secondary. C'mon this is horrible. My forefathers learned English and had to prove to the US that they were acceptable to live in the US. Now we turn a blind eye, don't enforse immigration policies, say they are doing jobs most Amercians won't do and live off of AMerican social programs. They know where to go before they even hit American soil for those programs. It is like the prisons, the prisoners have more rights than the good law abiding citizens.
We have got to take our country back before it is too late. White, hispanic, black , chinese, purple, orange. Let's quit playing the race card. I have lived here my whole life and never mistreated a person because of their color nor have I been mistreated.-until now. Now the whites and the AMerican hispanics are being discriminated against by folks that aren't even American. Let's get it together people it's going to be gone before we know it.

Ms. Juarez,
Are you still there? Can you answer my question please?
Why don't immigrants immigrate their minds, spirits and tongues into the American language? Or spend their time trying to improve Mexico rather than to impose on the States?
You commented on living in NY and LA, why? Is that a BFD?
Where your body is occupied is not as important as what occupies your mind.
If you are still there, one more thing....To be white in this town is to be an outsider.
I don't understand Spanish , but I know when they are talking about me cuz, they always say the same thing ....sounds like "pinching wader "??? I don't know what it means but they seem to laugh alot when I say "HI" back.

What planet did Rachel and Kathy come from? Kathy talks about taking back our country. Doesn't she know the United States took this part of the country from Mexico in 1848? Including the Mexican settlers who had been speaking Spanish for centuries before the arrival of the Anglos. Ladies, Mexican Americans are in their country and the language of choice is Spanish. Deal with the way things are and not the way they are not. The immigrants you two are talking about are kith and kin to Mexican Americans. Would the Israel turn away Jewish immigrants from wherever in the world? We need a comprehensive immigration policy that takes into consideration the historical facts that got the United States into this cultural and linguistic realm in the first place.

Zorro,
Read your history book, read many history books. When a war is won....winners take alll!
I am not making it up, that is what happens. That's the law of the jungle.
There was a war between the US and Mexico between 1846 and 1848. Guess who won?
Zorro, take off your mask so you can see the big picture.
If we lost WW2 we might be speaking German or Japanese.
When was the last time you heard the French bellyache about the
Louisianna Purchase?..I know... I know.. that was the not a war. But both of these major land deals came about by way treaties. A story that is repeated through out history.
Do you know that Massachsetts was purchase for a few barn tools?
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed in Feb. 1848.
The US also gave Mexico 15 million dollars for the purchase.
So the land is rightfully belonging to the US.
If you grandfather sold his lot, which was to be your inheritance, would you have a claim today? NO...you would sound like a stupid caped amd masked fool saying ...""Give it back!! It's mine, it's really mine!!
Respectfully, Zorro...
Grow up, get real ,life is tough, speak English. Or try to speak English as best you can. And you do I see.
Please show good manners because that's what responsible people do.
One closing thought , imagine if you will ,what would LA, Las Vegas , Sante Fe and Denver look like right now if it was still in Mexican hands?
Mexicans are great people, we are all great people . We can't change the past but we can always mind our manners and respect the mores of the land.
There was once a debate about which language the Americans would use ....French or English. Guess who won?
But all this I am sure you already know.
So Zorro, can you answer my question please?
Why don't Mexicans want to speak English?
Why do they want to move to the US but not act like they care about the people's feeling that have been here long before they came along?
Why do they want to change the States when their home land needs so much of their energies and talents?
That is what makes no sense to me.
I don't want to sound rude or to be rude...but the question stands.
Respectfully Rachel

Unfortunately for Rachel, there is a fact she didn't consider when she stated that "the winner takes all". Does it mean then that you support the slaughter of NATIVE AMERICANS who are actually the REAL Americans and DIDN'T SPEAK ENGLISH? In that case YOU ARE ALSO IMMIGRANT, Of course the British didn't let go of English and embrace a native language and/or the native's traditions. You should really deal with the fact that human groups have always and will always keep moving from place to place, it's been happening since the very early groups of homo sapiens and it will keep happening, regardless of any country's government and regardless of what you believe. Stop thinking just in yourself and your country, the world is not only the United States, today is the world's super power, just as one day France was, or Spain was, maybe tomorrow things will be different. Stop taking everything for granted. History is ALWAYS CHANGING and you being stuck in medieval thoughts isn't going to take you anywhere.
Do yourself a favor and learn some Spanish, it will help you sooner than you think.

Berenise,
So you can't answer the question either?
I agree with what you are saying about shifting powers/people and all that.
But the question stands..
Why don't Mexican immigrants want to speak English?
It seems like most of all the other immigrants from the past and present did/do.
Can you please or anyone else answer the question?
I am not trying to insult anyone, I am trying to understand.
Remember please ,I too have been an immigrant without the ability to speak the language of the new country.
So can you answer the question?

Berenice,
Spell out for me what I am taking for granted? I didn't get that.
Oh yeah... what does the ruthless and unforgivable blood shed of the Native Americans in the 19th century have to do with Mexican immigrants not speaking English today? I didn't get that either.
Does it tie in some way with the slave ships?
America has alot of blood on it's hands...no doubt!
When you debate/converse, do you remember the question/ subject?
Respectfully, Rachel

PS. Your statement concerning the British vs. native Americans confirms what I said about "winners take all".
See, I didn't make it up.
Did you think of an answer to my question?
