As of poll closing time Thursday, just under 100,000 El l Paso County residents had cast early ballots, breaking the previous record set in the 2004 presidential election.

Today is the last day to vote early in next Tuesday's election.

Figures posted on the El Paso County Elections Department website show more than 12,000 people voted Thursday, bringing the total to 99,634.

In 2004, 96,465 voted early in El Paso County.

County Elections Administrator Javier Chacon has said he expects the final early vote total to be between 105,000 and 110,000 when early voting ends today evening.

That will probably mean the total vote, after the polls close Tuesday, will exceed 200,000, easily a record for El Paso County.

Today and this evening particularly, he said, people should expect to stand in line to vote at the early voting stations around the county.

This year, there is an extra attraction: the colorful “I Voted” stickers election personnel are giving out that are quickly becoming collectors’ items.

They are not the run-of-the-mill oval stickers voters have been getting for years.

“We got them last year,” Chacon said. “There was a promotion going on to get ready for the presidential election year and we ordered 250,000 of them.

“Now we’re getting calls for them. When it came out that they’re going to be a collector’s item, now everyone wants them and people are taking more than one.”

To keep from running out, he said, election personnel are giving them away one at a time when they hand people’s voter registration cards or IDs back to them.

“You want your sticker?” Chacon said. “Go out and vote.”
