CBP officers seize more than half a ton of marijuana in a commercial shipment of metal sheets
El Paso, Texas —U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) field operations officers working at the El Paso port of entry seized 1,213 pounds of marijuana Thursday late afternoon. The drugs were discovered in a commercial shipment of metal sheets. The estimated value of the drugs is $1,031,050.
The seizure was made at 6:00 p.m. (MST) when a 1991 Freightliner tractor pulling a flat bed trailer arrived from Mexico at the Bridge of the Americas commercial facility. The driver declared metal sheets to CBP. The CBP officer performed a cursory inspection of the shipment then referred it for an x-ray examination. The Vehicle and Cargo Inspection System (VACIS) confirmed anomalies in the stacks of metal sheets. The CBP officers continued with their inspection removing 498 marijuana filled packages from the hollowed out stacks of metal plates. No arrests were made. The investigation continues.
“The job to balance facilitation and enforcement is something we do every day at the Port of El Paso,” said William Molaski, U. S. Customs and Border Protection, El Paso port director. “This large marijuana seizure is the excellent enforcement work done by our officers.”
CBP Field Operations is responsible for securing our borders at the ports of entry. U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers’ primary mission is anti-terrorism; they screen all people, vehicles, and goods entering the United States, while facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel into and out of the United States. Their mission also includes carrying out traditional border-related responsibilities, including narcotics interdiction, enforcing immigration law, protecting the nation’s food supply and agriculture industry from pests and diseases, and enforcing trade laws.

The West Texas HIDTA Stash House unit would like to remind the public of possible indicators
1) Rental homes
2) Attached garages
3) Unkept Yards
4) Little if any furniture
5) Occupants keep to themselves (not visible on a daily basis)
6) Occupants will not hold a normal pattern of lifestyle
7) Different vehicles (especially vans and pickup trucks) entering and exiting the garage
8) Vehicles arriving at the stash house will have different out of town plates (Texas, New Mexico, Mexico, and paper “buyer” or “dealer” plates
9) Sudden activity in the home after days or weeks of not seen anyone at the home
10) Accumulation of advertisements on the front door
11) Occupants do not usually put their trash out for regular collection, but instead prefer to dump it at another location themselves.
These again are some of the typical indicators of a stash house, and these indicators alone do not necessarily mean
that the occupants of the home are running a stash house. As a general rule if residents believe there is suspicious activity in
a home in there area they should call the West Texas Stash House Unit at 629-8600 or Crime Stoppers at 566-8477(TIPS).

CBP goes full WHTI implementation and intercepts imposter with genuine U.S. passport
EL PASO, Texas - U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers working at the El Paso port of entry arrested a Mexican national for making a claim to United States citizenship by presenting a genuine U.S passport not issued to him. The arrest was made at the Bridge of the Americas international crossing Monday afternoon.
The apprehension was made at approximately 4:15 p.m. when 28-year-old Librado Escobedo-Gonzalez applied for entry into the U.S. from Mexico. The CBP officer noticed an inconsistency in the U.S. passport. Escobedo was escorted to Passport Control secondary inspection for further examination. During the course of the inspection, CBP officers discovered Escobedo was an imposter. Escobedo is not the legitimate owner of the passport. CBP officers arrested Escobedo for making a false claim to U.S. Citizenship. Escobedo is being held at the El Paso County Detention facility without bond.
“The requirement for U.S. and Canadian citizens to present a WHTI approved document when entering the United States strengthen our enforcement efforts,”said William Molaski, CBP El Paso Port Director. “The WHTI document requirement made the inspection process that much more secure.”
On Monday, CBP fully implemented WHTI at U.S. land and sea ports of entry. U.S. and Canadian citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry need to have WHTI compliant documents, most commonly a U.S. passport, passport card, trusted traveler card or enhanced driver’s license.
While anti-terrorism is the primary mission of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the inspection process at the ports of entry associated with this mission results in impressive numbers of enforcement actions in all categories.
