CBP officers discover marijuana hidden inside picture frames
Antelope Wells, New Mexico — U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers working at the Antelope Wells Port of Entry made an unusual marijuana seizure Monday afternoon. CBP officers discovered 75.5 pounds of marijuana hidden inside the frames of oversized oil paintings.
On Monday Aug. 3, at about 2:15 p.m. a 2003 Dodge Ram pick-up arrived at the primary inspection booth from Los Congos, Chihuahua, Mexico. The driver told the CBP officer that he had oil paintings in the back of the pick-up. The CBP officer noticed signs of nervousness from the driver. The driver was escorted out of the vehicle into the CBP building to conduct an extensive inspection of the vehicle. CBP officers discovered 72 marijuana-filled packages concealed in the four picture frames.
“CBP officers at the port of Antelope Wells are working hard to disrupt the criminal smuggling organizations’ activity in the boot heel of New Mexico. This is another good example of our officers’ vigilance and attention to detail,” said Charles Wright, CBP Port Director Columbus, New Mexico who oversees the Antelope Wells Port of Entry.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) special agents arrested 44-year-old Manuel Zapata Ontiveros in connection with the failed smuggling attempt. Ontiveros is a Resident Alien residing in Phoenix, Arizona.
While anti-terrorism is the primary mission of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the inspection process at the ports of entry associated with this mission results in impressive numbers of enforcement actions in all categories.

EL PASO SECTOR BORDER PATROL AGENT PLEADS GUILTY TO FRAUD CHARGE
John E. Murphy, Acting United States Attorney announced that in El Paso, Border Patrol
agent Ernesto Tellez faces up to two years in federal prison and $34,425 restitution after
pleading guilty this afternoon to making a false statement to federal authorities.
Appearing before United States Magistrate Judge Michael McDonald, Tellez admitted that on
November 24, 2004, he signed a U.S. Housing and Urban Development certification to purchase
a home under the Officer Next Door Program/Teacher Next Door Program (OND/TND)
knowing that certification contained false information.
The OND/TND program makes greatly discounted real property available for purchase by law
enforcement officers and teachers under certain conditions. Among those conditions is that the
law enforcement officer or teacher occupy the residence for at least three years and that they own
no other real property.
According to court records, Tellez executed similar annual certification forms since 2004. Each
time, Tellez certified that he abided by program terms when in fact, he did own interest in other
residential property and thus, not in compliance. On January 4, 2007, believing that Tellez had
satisfied the original terms of the agreement, HUD released the $38,250 lien on the property.
Per the plea agreement and the OND/TND default formula, Tellez has agreed to pay restitution
amounting to 90% of the HUD lien.
No sentencing date has been scheduled.
This case was investigated by agents with the Department of Homeland Security Office of
Inspector General and the Department of Housing and Urban Development--Office of Inspector
General. Assistant United States Attorney Greg McDonald is prosecuting this case on behalf of
the Government.

Border Patrol Agents Seize over $750,000 in Marijuana
Alamogordo, New Mexico – Border Patrol Agents from the El Paso Sector had a busy start to the month as they seized over 950 pounds of marijuana in four separate incidents on the first day of August.
Border Patrol Agents assigned to the Alamogordo, New Mexico traffic checkpoint on U.S. 54 apprehended a man from Mexico driving a Chevy Avalanche after a K-9 unit detected that the vehicle he was driving was loaded with narcotics, Saturday. Agents observed the man driving the truck as he approached the primary inspection area and proceeded to question him. The driver was then referred to a secondary inspection, where a non-intrusive search by a canine unit alerted on the presence of narcotics. A subsequent search revealed 214 bundles of marijuana with a combined weight of 524 pounds. The contraband, with an estimated value of $419,200, was discovered in various after market compartments that were build into the vehicle.
Agents in Lordsburg were also busy Saturday tracking a group of individuals that had made their way across the U.S./ Mexico border on foot. The smugglers soon discovered the agents were closing in and decided to abandon the narcotics and run back to Mexico. Although the smugglers managed to make it back across the border, they were forced to abandon over 350 pounds of marijuana with a value of approximately $285,600.
On that same day, Agents from Las Cruces and Truth or Consequences arrested two men in separate encounters when the vehicles they were in were found to have marijuana hidden inside. One vehicle had a suitcase with 35 pounds of pot hidden inside. The second individual was arrested when it was discovered that the 1994 Nissan Sentra he was driving had 34 pounds of narcotics hidden in the front and rear bumpers of the car. In both cases, the individuals responsible were arrested and subsequently turned over to the New Mexico State Police.
