During the past week, we have heard from Democratic and Republican strategists about whether Caroline Kennedy should be appointed by New York Gov. David Paterson to the U.S. senatorial seat being vacated by Hillary Clinton. Political pundits and vacuum-head newscasters have in a shrill fashion stated that she isn’t qualified for the position. As I recall, all you have to be is 30 years of age and an American citizen. There is a residence requirement also. If I’m correct Caroline Kennedy meets all of the requirements. She has lived in New York for an inordinate period of time and is lucid, savvy and strong willed.
President John F. Kennedy’s daughter also has a quality that seems to be sorely lacking in many of today’s political leaders. She has common sense and is ethical and of good moral standing. The same can’t be said for many congressional leaders, as well as outgoing and incoming cabinet members, who allow their spouses to serve as lobbyists and consultants in the rarified and increasingly corrupt atmosphere called Washington, D. C. This past presidential campaign, as well as the illegal activities of former political leaders appointed to well heeled positions on Wall Street and at Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, demonstrated just how far we have strayed from the principles laid down in the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights.
It is quite understandable that there are many politicians who have paid their dues and are in the queue hopefully waiting to be tapped by Gov. Paterson to fill the position. However, in light of what has unfolded in Illinois, where the Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich showed his true colors and tried to sell the Obama senate seat to the highest bidder, this is the time to appoint to public office a person with impeccable credentials.
Caroline Kennedy may not have the political skills of Jesse Ventura, Larry Craig, “Duke” Cunningham, Charlie Rangel, Arnold Schwarzenegger or George W. Bush, but she sure has something going for her that few people do. She is an intelligent trustworthy individual who cares about her fellow Americans no matter what their social standing. She has worked in the field of education for a very long time and engaged in worthwhile philanthropic activities. She is also a lawyer and a mother. Not a bad comparison to Alaskan Gov. Sarah Palin! I am sure that readers will howl that I am a left-leaning liberal who is blind to her faults, but in light of where the American people find themselves financially, economically and socially today, I think she will be a breath of fresh air. I must confess though that as a former Peace Corps Volunteer, who had the privilege of meeting with President Kennedy at the White House in 1962, it is hard to be objective. In those days we would have gone over a cliff for him and Camelot!
Her father’s political career was cut short by an assassin’s bullet and her uncle, Robert Kennedy’s term as the United States Senator from New York ended at the hands of a deranged Sirhan Sirhan. She may not have the experience of a congressman or other political leaders, but no one has remotely been subjected to the political and family tragedies she has since her early childhood. She has a great appreciation of the value of public service and the inherent dangers that accompany it.
Shakespeare once penned “Much ado about nothing”. That surely is the case with Caroline Kennedy. She has expressed an interest in becoming the U.S Senator from New York and given her track record, I believe she will serve the citizens of the Empire State in an admirable fashion. Pure and simple. Never forget “Noblesse Oblige.”

Of course she is qualified. She is over 30 and a citizen. Will she represent the special interest groups populating Manhatten and Massachusetts? Yes. As for the rest of us: beware.

blah, blah, blah..... some folks (Bill Tilney) just feel "obligated" to put their two cents in even when the topic means squat to us less than noble folks in El Paso. Do we care that Carolyn is demanding a seat based purely on pedigry?
Don't we have more important things to worry about just a few thousand feet away in Juarez???

Utter horse manure, this is. Caroline Schlossberg is unworthy to shine Governor Palin's shoes.

Having a "D" after your name does not qualify you for office, although many Democrats think it does. That is one of the reasons why El Paso is so far behind other cities in many quality of life and economic aspects...people here vote not for the best qualified but for those with a "D" after their name (Mayor Cook, Shapley, Moody, Rodriguez, Cobos, Reyes, Tilney). Need I go on? They don't accomplish anything but people keep re-electing them.

She was born a Kennedy!! Hip hip hooray for her. She hasn't done anything important beyond that. Okay she donates money to charities. She hasn't earned any of the money herself. She will likey be as accountable as her Uncle Teddy.

All you have to do is look at all the qualified people we have today in Washington DC, and you tell me: Is she qualified? Personally, I feel the question at stake here is: Are they qualified and what makes her any less. Even our most qualified Politicos, recently have employed the biggest blunders and catastrophies this nation has ever experienced. Furthermore, that includes all their Rocket Science Degrees, bells and whistles and years of experience, Ms. Kenndey is an indivisual and has the right to the career of her choice.

"Ms. Kenndey is an indivisual and has the right to the career of her choice." Very true statement.....however, she does not have the right to demand the seat in the U.S. Senate is handed to her....
Perhaps she should have moved to Illinois and paid Governor Blagojevich for the seat.....Is what Ms. Kennedy doing in New York any different???

Mr d: You are absolutely right. We have more important concerns to deal with than whether Caroline Kennedy becomes the next senator from the great state of New York. There is no doubt that Ciudad Juarez is a much more important issue and threat to the well being and livelihood of the citizens of El Paso. Back in 1969, when I was assigned to Mexico as a Vice Consul, the budget for DEA, formerly the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs ,was less than $70 million dollars. In 1970, President Nixon literally closed the US Mexican border, when he launched "Operation Intercept". Its intent was to shut off drugs flowing into the United States from south of the border. It failed. In 1981, I was posted to Ciudad Juarez as the American Consul General. During my tenure there, DEA's budget increased to $365 million dollars by 1985. There was the Camarena incident, the creation of cartels and vast quantities of drugs moved across the border. Notwithstanding the efforts of DEA, along with Immigration, US Customs, the Border Patrol and the Department of Agriculture, drugs flows into the United States increased manifold. Violence multiplied significantly during that same timeframe and Ciudad Juarez become notorious for its "narcotraficantes". . This past year we saw DEA"s budget increase into the billions of dollars to combat the drug trade flowing into the United States. Here along the Mexican border, we have seen thousands of innocent people slaughtered in Juarez and other border towns. Why they were killed is simple. Greed, drugs and a struggle to control the very lucrative drug trade. It has affected the way people live on both sides of the border. IIllegal drugs have also created an enormous law enforcement presence to combat and stop the flow of drugs into the United States. Has it been effective? The American people should be questioning the federal government's policies concerning how we deal with drug trafficking. Will we continue to watch our neighbor to the south become a "failed state "because of the American insatiable demand for drugs? Will we continue to see budgets and numbers balloon as we throw money at this obscene problem. When will we have a president that has the "huevos" to say "Enough " to this macabre dance along the US-Mexican border Until we do, I will continue to write articles about Caroline Kennedy. At least one can still dream and have hope for the future when addressing these mundane issues. By the way, pedigree is spelt this way. Wishing you a Happy New Year.

Mr. D, I appreciate your comment, but I tend to differ w/you on the fact that Ms. Kennedy , has every right to do whatever she desires so long as it is within the law... Now if you have your own preference and opinion, then I respect that." If she someday becomes a senator, she won't be the first indivisual w/a political bloodline and support system to get there.

"Pedigry" as in dog food which is what those who think pedigree entitles one to hold a position way above their pay grade.......
