Michelle Obama steps into Denver spotlight wearing patriotism on sleeve

To some, she is a black Jackie Kennedy and fashion ‘Glamazon’ who triggered a nationwide retail rush on black-and-white print sundresses after wearing one during a June appearance on ABC’s The View. To others, she is Mrs. Discontent, a liberal radical who told a campaign audience she first felt proud of her country after her husband’s presidential campaign met with success.

But the Michelle Obama voters will see today under the carefully orchestrated spotlight of Denver’s Pepsi Center will be someone altogether more traditional and inspiring — the daughter of a Chicago city worker who overcame a South Side upbringing to earn a Harvard law degree and land a $300,000 a year job. Above all, the American television audiences will see an unbridled patriot.

What Michelle will wear is a more tightly held secret than my VP choice: Barack Obama
New York, Aug.23 (ANI): What his wife, Michelle, will be wearing, is a more tightly held secret than what his vice-presidential choice was, says presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Barack Obama.

When asked what Michelle was going to wear on Monday night, CBS quoted Obama as saying: "You know, there -- there are some things that even I don't know. And what Michelle is gonna wear is a tightly held secret. More tightly held than who my vice presidential choice is gonna be."

This was just before he formerly announced the name of Delaware Senator Joseph Biden Junior as his running mate.

America gets chance to size up Michelle Obama
Candidate's wife to give keynote speech

And there's her fashion sense. Michelle recently landed on Vanity Fair's 2008 international best-dressed list amid praise for her preferences toward simple dresses with plunging necklines.

When CBS News anchor Harry Smith interviewed Barack Obama last week, his final question to the presidential candidate was: "Do you know what Michelle is going to wear Monday night?"

Michelle insists she's uncomfortable with the focus on her wardrobe, sort of. "It's hard," she recently told ABC News. "I'm kind of a tomboy jock at heart but I like to look nice."

Michelle Obama and Cindy McCain Vying for Jackie O Status as First Lady of FashionMichelle Obama and Cindy McCain Vying for Jackie O Status as First Lady of Fashion
As we careen towards the most telegenic, hypnotic and addictive US Election in decades, ShoeMinx would like to weigh in on how air-kissing Cindy McCain stacks up to fist-thumping Michelle Obama. We all know that Jackie O set the benchmark for First Lady trend-setting, what with her eventual contraband addiction to Chanel. How uncivilized that the populist American people drove her love of elite couture underground. Ah well, she strove on in style.

Michelle is blessed with a lovely figure and can carry off a wide array of designers. We like more archival images, which show a classic style. We like these sling back kitten heels.

Fashion Forward: Michelle Obama vs. Cindy McCain. Who's Got the Edge When It Comes to Style?
This is a rush transcript from "America's Election HQ," June 6, 2008. This copy may not be in its final form and may be updated.
MEGYN KELLY, CO-HOST: Well, now that they are constantly in the spotlight as potential first ladies, Michelle Obama and Cindy McCain, not taking a backseat to their powerful husbands when it comes to style. Look at these ladies!

Both women have been featured in Vogue magazine though they have decidedly different dress codes. Michelle Obama opts for a Jackie Kennedy chic look, described once as "Camelot with a tan." Cindy McCain prefers some of the more expensive high-end designers. But who's got the edge when it comes to first lady fashion?

"In Style" magazine's national correspondent, Katrina Szish is here to give us the lowdown. Hi, Katrina.

KELLY: So they both have very different looks. They have very stylish looks. Who looks more first lady-ish?

SZISH: Well, I have to say that Michelle Obama has a little bit more of the kind of shift dress and big oversized pearls thing going on.

KELLY: The Jackie O. thing?

SZISH: She certainly does, especially with that purple dress we saw her in the other night when she did the little political punch(ph) with her husband.
