El Paso County Judge Anthony Cobos was making the rounds in Washington last week, but just what he was doing there depends on who one asks.
He was spotted along the way by other El Pasoans, and the county auditor’s office reports that there was a $125 charge on the county credit card Cobos carries in Dallas, a stop-over, that Monday afternoon.
He skipped the day’s Commissioners Court meeting (Monday, Nov. 17, 2008) and has since missed two special meetings of Commissioners Court.
The county auditor's office said the computer showed only "American" with no further indication of what the charge was for.
Could have been his extra baggage. Or maybe he changed planes for the Dallas to Washington leg to get away from all the El Pasoans who recognized him. Or an upgrade to first class, which American Airlines offers for $125.
One account had him in the capital visiting the offices of U.S. Reps. Silvestre Reyes and Ciro Rodriguez in an effort to hook up with someone close to President-elect Barack Obama.
The tale has him wanting to talk about the ongoing public corruption investigation in El Paso and how soon U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton, a Bush appointee, would be out-going.
That story led to others.
Reyes’ office denied that the subject of Cobos meeting with the congressman was Sutton or the investigation.
It was about a job, they said. That is, if there might one for him in D.C.
His visit to Reyes' office was described as an unplanned courtesy call.
Cobos has been a known target in the FBI’s public corruption investigation since early 2007 when FBI agents turned up in force at the courthouse to search his office and the offices of Commissioners Luis Sarinana and Miguel Teran.
None of them has been charged, though nine others have pleaded guilty in the past 17 months to various bribery, conspiracy and fraud charges, including Cobos’ former chief of staff, Travis Ketner, who was the first to plead.
Cobos’ term as county judge is supposed to last for two more years, so why he might be looking for a job is anybody’s guess.
On checking with Rodriguez’s office, Press Secretary Phallan Davis, on her last day in that job, initially said Cobos came by last Tuesday as a “a last-minute thing … just a courtesy visit.”
“What I understand they talked about was funding projects for El Paso … money for city buses for El Paso.”
The idea of Cobos lobbying for the city’s Sun Metro department made little sense since the city has highly paid lobbyists to do that who are often assisted by the Mayor John Cook and other city officials.
Asking the press secretary to try again brought Rodriguez’s chief of communications, Josh Rosenblum, to the phone.
“He was visiting about rural bus stuff,” Rosenblum said, adding that someone from the county’s lobby firm was with him.
Rosenblum described the visit as a courtesy call but then said it had been set up earlier.
“He didn’t just show up on our doorstep,” Rosenblum said.
The county does provide limited bus service in rural areas and reportedly has two old buses due to be replaced by two more that are already in the pipeline. The money is budgeted.
But the county doesn’t need any more buses.
So they never talked about Sutton and the investigation?
“No,” Rosenblum said.
So why was Cobos in Washington? He did not return Newspaper Tree’s call.

Cobos will always look out for himself and I doubt he had County business in D.C. I only hope that the Justice department doesn't let him and the others that have been implicated in court documents skate. We finally have a chance for a little clean-up and should take full advantage.

Rumor has it that Sylvestre Reyes is sponsoring Anthony Cobos for some position within the Obama administration...low level, but a position none the less...supposedly took him to DC last week....if he gets the position there is an agreement that he would resign as County Judge and Haggerty has the votes to installed as interim county judge...apparently other members of the court do not want Veronica Escobar in that position....

Funny how when a Hispanic travles to DC the world gets turned upside down..... Have you questioned every trip that an Anglo takes to DC?
Can't hardly wait until the first Hispanic is elected President of the United States. Perhaps then you won't get paranoid when a Hispanic travels there.

If Cobos traveled at taxpayer expense, we have every right to ask why he went. I don't care if he is yellow, purple, or blue. Him being Hispanic has nothing to do with this. The fact that he is under FBI investigation does. Stop crying wolf, "D".

It's interesting, David. Cobos seemed to call NPT a "tabloid" and you, a washed-up reporter. He thought answering or responding to questions was a "nuisance."
Actual quote from the Times:"I am extremely busy as the county judge and it is a nuisance to respond to tabloid claims written by a washed up reporter," Cobos said. "I got more important things to do."
I'm offended for you guys. I'm offended period.

How can you you say that and expect to be taken seriously?
YOU are the only one injecting race into this.
Sounds like you have an agenda and no objectivity

A JOB?!?!? you have to be kidding. Obama vetted campaign surrogates, elected officials on the campaign trail, even where they stopped for lunch. If Reyes wants Cobos to get a job in DC he will have to hire him himself.

doesn't seem to like you (his insult rant against you for this article). This, by my definition, adds your qualifications to serve in public office. Make sure to apply: change.gov If the Obama administration hires him it will be a sad day, and he will be an anchor on progress. Really: What a turd

Kudos to NPT for this story. Cobos has a narrow window of opportunity. He can guarantee 3 votes on Commissioners Court until December 31. After that, he's all alone. So, he has to hurry to make a deal with someone like Reyes who can potentiallly help Cobos get a job (preferably out of town, because Cobos has no future in El Paso in any capacity).
Of course, the Obama administration would be insane to give an un-indicted co-conspirator in a major public corruption investigation a job. Of course it's not going to happen. Reyes, if he ever had any intention of seriously helping Cobos, must realize he has to back off now that the scheme (if it existed) has been exposed.
Sarinana (and maybe to a lesser extent Teran) is also desperate, because, unlike Cobos, he won't have a job come January 1. They're all like rats jumping off a sinking ship.
To the moron who stated that this is a race issue, you're not only a moron but you're apparently okay with a public official using tax dollars to fly to D.C. to try to engineer a quid pro quo because, by his own actions, he has made himself a target of federal law enforcement (and totally un-re-electable in the process) and then has the gall to spend an extra $125 of taxpayer money to change flights so that he's not on the same flight as other El Pasoans.
I'm thankful that someone who saw him on the first leg of his flight blew the whistle and that Crowder did the story. It's a cliche, but sunshine is the best disinfectant.

No matter how many questions you asked, what purpose was served by listing names? Nothing but sensationalism. If you were truly interested in reporting information in a useful manner you would have gathered data as to whether teachers had failed tests and were teaching without required qualifications or if they were trying to advance, failed and were not teaching in roles requiring passing the test.
If you tried to pass a test required to fly, failed and did not fly should you have your name in the news. Should you not be able to study, practice and try again?
You all have slowly slid into an insulting mode rather than doing a professional of reporting.

Well that explains why his Assistant was appointing himself to the Planning position because his boss is leaving and he needs another county job to jump on. Next time Cobos travels to anywhere for El Paso he should do the appropriate politic thing and just tell El Paso. As for his comment about the writer of this article that was so educated and prominent for a County Judge to state to another media source. Good thing that type of criteria is not required to lead this city or to be elected to a position along with a serious lack of a dose some call CLASS.
Let's add this up, shall we?
November 26, 2008
Just read the El Paso Times piece, where Reyes' people claim Cobos was only there for county business.
But a Reyes staffer (obviously, at least a day or more earlier), told Newspapertree that Cobos was there looking for a job.
And the Ciro Rodriguez staff fumbled to get the palatable responses to Newspapertree, changing their story a little along the way.
Then there's Cobos, who claims to have business (again) in D.C. next week. Why such urgent business in D.C. for our unindicted John Co-Conspirator Cobos all of a sudden?
We can add. Thanks to Crowder for laying out the math for us.

The “objectivity” I expect would come from reporters who should be above personal vendettas overridden by a commitment to serve the community in which they report.
Race is a factor in the on-going investigation and that is where the true story lies (hear that David????).

D,
The objectivity comment was directed to you but you don't seem to want to address that do you? No of course not, when you are in an indefensible position its always best to duck and cover right?
The real story is about corrupt politicians and their cohorts, but of course you believe they are the victims of some kind of racial bias or personal vendetta by a lone reporter.
Crowder is responsible for everything right? or wait maybe he's just a puppet for all the evil Anglo masterminds that really run this city from behind the scenes and sole purpose is to wipe this city clean of any Hispanics in a position of power. Thats got to be the "real" story right?
Better yet why don't you the apparently all knowing, all seeing political prophet enlighten us with all the juicy tidbits?..I'm sure we would all be fascinated with your insider information.
Heck maybe you need to have a convo with the FBI agents investigating the corruption, I'm sure they would love to be enlightened as to the "real" story too.

Really? This is news in El Paso? I understand that Judge Cobos is under investigation by the FBI and the need to hold our County officials accountable. The way you go about reporting, however, smacks of political mudslinging undermining your credibility. A different approach would have you follow the story and report once something worth reporting surfaced. Speculation isn't news. On a related note, I urge you to do more to mobilize your readership around all the innocent people dieing in Juarez. El Pasoans were silent too long when the women were being killed and we can't be silent again.

Regarding comments by "El Pasoan in Washington": Somehow I'm not comforted by advice coming out of Washington as it relates to any matter from any party. Could you just shut up?...unless of course, you're in Washington State. In that case, how did ACORN do with registrations this year? And to "D." I can't stop laughing. You racists don't get enough, do you? The country just elected a Black man with a questionable past. He was put in the presidency by various groups not to mention large numbers of Hispanics. You got everything you wanted except "change." What more do you want? You want to be loved too? AND it's not David Crowder's fault! We all know it's Bush's fault. Get some balance in your life, D. Why would you want to read a "tabloid" and an article by a "washed-up reporter" anyway? I think you're a nuisance.

Most likely Cobos was meeting with DOJ public corruption officials above Debbie Kanof's head, trying to make a deal: "If I quit my job, will you stop the prosecution?" Only time will tell if the plan works.
