Scenic Sundays coming to City by
El Paso Parks and Recreation Department

A great follow – up event to popular Ciclovia from last year.

Ciclovia in the first year of existence was a tremendous event in the first year in May of 2007. Ciclovia is a temporary urban space in which public streets are closed to motor vehicles so that pedestrians, cyclists, rollerbladers and walkers can take over. It is much different than a race, parade, trail or bike lane. During Ciclovia, participants experience the outdoors with the additional thrill of free movement on a road that is usually congested with automobile traffic.

Continuing on the momentum of this family – styled event, the City of El Paso Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting Scenic Sundays starting next month that will be free to the public. It will give the opportunity for citizens and their pets in the city, surrounding communities and Juarez to ride, skate, walk or run on Scenic Drive from 6:00 a.m. to Noon on Sundays starting on April 6, and lasting through August 31.

J.A. R. Concrete will line the area with barrels for safety and the El Paso Police Department will be providing security along this popular and legendary path in the city. “Scenic Drive will now be the focus of the event as it was the most popular segment on the entire route during Ciclovia, as over 500 people each Sunday is expected to participate in Scenic Sundays,” according to Shamori Whitt, Open Space Coordinator for the City of El Paso Parks and Recreation Department.

Whitt added, “Community Fitness is becoming a hot topic throughout the United States, not only because of the physical health benefits but for the dialogue it creates in neighborhoods. Last year over 5,000 total people participated, (not including all the four legged participants) in Ciclovia and we hope to capture more of the energy of that event for Scenic Sundays.”
