El Paso,TX – Massage therapy can help diabetics cope with disease.
El Paso is currently living through a diabetes epidemic, where over 1.1 million Borderland residents, 18 and up, are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and almost 900,000 more are pre-diabetic. Besides standard medicine, massage therapy can be a treatment that helps ease the pains inherent in diabetes.
There are many benefits of massage therapy for people with diabetes. Most of these would be similar to the benefits of massage for the general population, but there are certain advantages that are of particular interest for diabetics.
It has myofascial effects on diabetics. Which means that it works directly with the muscles and connective tissues, helping to facilitate greater mobility in the body. This is especially important for the diabetic patient because high blood sugar levels thicken connective tissue, which affects mobility and elasticity of the myofascial system. The symptoms are stiff muscles, ligaments and tendons, as well as decreased range of motion in the joints. Massage therapy counters this effect.
Another benefit is relaxation. Diabetes is inherently a stressful condition because irregular sugar levels strain the body's systems. By calming the nervous system, massage can bring a much-needed rest and an assuring sense of well-being to the body. A professional massage can have a profound effect on body chemistry, decreasing the production of stress hormones, with resulting beneficial effects to blood sugar levels.
It is important to find a qualified and skilled massage therapist when it comes to treating your body. It is of higher concern if you are a diabetic. A massage therapist should be certified by the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) and the NCBTMB (National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork) There are few massage therapists in El Paso that are certified by both.
Keith Roseman, of Southwest Wellness Clinic in El Paso, says that a “Massage therapist that treats a patient with diabetes needs to be very careful. We are mindful of the patient’s glucose levels and the last time they ate”. He states that sometimes, diabetic patients have reduced sensitivity, and so they need to get a lighter massage. “We give a relaxing, gentle massage that will help with their circulation which is one of the biggest benefits that can come to a diabetic person that gets a massage” Roseman recommends bi-monthly massages to diabetics.
